From the Orkney Isles, down to the Hebridean islands of Mull and Islay, sourcing the best island malts to create the warming, smoky backbone of our whisky
THE SCALASAIG ‘Island Hopper’ is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky with a distinctly maritime style, born on the tiny Hebridean Isle of Colonsay (10 miles north of Islay). Selecting the finest island and coastal malts, expertly vatted together and finished for a full year in first-fill Dry Oloroso Sherry hogsheads, the character is smoky, sweet and savoury all at once. Bottled with no colour added and at a strength of 43% alc. by volume, this is the brand’s ‘Maiden Voyage’ and we are going to be seeing a lot more from them in the years to come, including some exceptional single casks of island malt whiskies.
The company – Colonsay Beverages – started out at their premises in the tiny port village of Scalasaig as a brewery in June 2007 with three signature beers. By 2017, they were producing small batches of gin and recently released Wild Island ‘Distiller’s Cut’ nationally, distilled on their own 250 litre still. The company has aspirations to produce its own small batch Hebridean Single Malt whisky on the island within the next 3 years.
